Australia is home to a wide range of dangerous animals, reptiles, arachnids and insects. Amongst them is the mosquito, a common pest that’s also a known carrier of a number of bacteria and diseases. In WA alone, mosquitos are responsible for transmitting the Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus, Kunjin virus and Murray Valley encephalitis virus.

Mosquitoes carry diseases

When they bite, mosquitoes can not only leave a nasty bite but can also spread disease. Mosquito transmitted disease is common across much of the world and Australia is no exception. Some of diseases which mosquitoes can spread in Australia include Murray Valley encephalitis virus, Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus.

Recently, there has been a lot of attention given the mosquito transmitted Zika virus and it’s important to consider this when travelling. Although this virus is generally not considered to have severe symptoms, it has been found to cause congenital abnormalities when transmitted to pregnant women.

Dengue fever is another common mosquito borne illness which can occur when travelling. Mosquito borne disease can cause serious illness and, in serious cases, even death.

How to avoid mosquito bites

There are a number of simple ways you can avoid mosquito bites and this is particularly important when travelling.

  • Remember that dusk and dawn are the most common times when mosquitoes will be active so avoid these times if there is an infestation
  • Install flyscreens into your home so mosquitoes can’t make their way inside. Use a mosquito net if overseas
  • Use mosquito repellent in mosquito prone environments on all exposed skin, particularly your ankles and feet which are often forgotten
  • Wear long and loose fitting clothing to deter mosquitoes and to make it harder for them to find exposed skin
  • Try mosquito coils or citronella candles in outdoor areas to repel mosquitoes and put them on before dusk

Mosquitoes breed in water so be sure to do simple maintenance around the house to deter them. Keep gutters clear so water doesn’t pool and be sure to empty and refill pet water on a regular basis. Cover rainwater tanks and other water sources with mosquito-proof mesh and empty kids’ paddling pools.
