Protecting your pets during pest control treatments

26 Oct 2016

How can we Help?

As we’re coming into summer, it’s a good time to get your pest control technician around to ensure your home remains pest free in the warmer months. While you want to get rid of unwanted guests, you also need to make sure you keep your pets safe when a treatment is being undertaken. Today, we’ll be looking at steps you can take to make sure your furry friends are protected during pest treatments.

Keeping your pets safe

Warn your technician – When your technician comes to take a look at your house, always let them know if you have any pets. This may impact on the type of treatments they use and also means they can advise you on how pest to protect your pets. Don’t leave it until the treatment is about to start before you warn them.

Contain pets during treatment – No matter how badly your pooch wants to play with the technician while they carry out their work, always make sure your pets are put away during treatment. Bring them inside if you’re having the outside treated or lock them away in a room. Cats can be easily contained in a cat carrier. Better still, ask a family member or friend to watch your pets for a few hours so they’re out of harm’s way.

Cover up food and bedding – It’s not just your pets you need to put away during treatments, you also need to make sure that any food and bedding is covered or packed away. Mist or droplets can contaminate these items so always keep these items out of the way. This also includes things such as dog toys and scratching posts.

Cover up fish and birds – If you keep fish or birds around the house, put a cover over their tank or cage, such as a towel or blanket, before the treatment starts to prevent them coming into contact with mist or droplets. If you’re worried about the effects of chemicals on more exotic pets, contact your vet and ask for advice.

Ask about safe treatments – While some pest treatments are effective, they might not necessarily be safe for pets. Make sure you enquire about which treatment are safe for your pets and your family so you can be confident that you’re choosing the best option.
