Murray Valley Encephalitis Warning
🦟 WARNING! 🦟
Residents and tourists in Western Australia’s Kimberley region have been urged to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites after the detection of Murray Valley Encephalitis around Kununurra.
WA Health Department managing scientist of biological hazards Michael Lindsay has said that it was the first detection of the virus this wet season.
The Murray Valley encephalitis virus is found in northern Australia circulating between mosquitoes and water birds. Every now and again the virus spreads to southern regions, as mosquitoes come into contact with infected birds that have come down from northern regions.
Most people infected don’t develop symptoms. But, if you’re unlucky, you might develop a range of symptoms from fever and headache to paralysis, encephalitis and coma.
Around 40% of people who develop symptoms won’t fully recover and about 25% die. Generally, one or two human cases are reported in Australia per year.
Remember to cover up and use mosquito repellant if travelling in these areas.
